'Professional Skepticism'
The professional skeptic's job is to protect vital business interests against 'great ideas' that really are too good to be true. Never one to undervalue creative insight, radical revolution, or true genius, I have nonetheless learned through experience that the business world is full of pseudo-scientific snake oil. But distinguishing creative insight, radical revolution, and true genius, on the one hand, from pseudo-scientific snake oil on the other, can be harder than it sounds. Worse, a false negative could be just as costly as a false positive: wrongly investing in a 'great idea' may be expensive, but missing out on one and allowing a competitor to capitalise on it instead may be even worse. With a background in logic, mathematics and scientific research, as well as commercial acumen developed as an analyst, senior manager and private investor, I am well positioned to help senior decision makers rapidly evaluate those unforeseen 'great ideas' which can be either tremendous opportunities or -- more often than not -- potentially costly distractions.
