Curriculum Vitae: Honours & Awards

  • Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (1998)
Founded by William Shipley in 1754, the Society's original aims were "To embolden enterprise, to enlarge science, to refine art, to improve our manufactures and to extend our commerce...". These aims continue today. The Patron of the Society is Her Majesty the Queen, and its president is His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. I was elected a Fellow at the age of 28; the normal minimum age at the time was 35 years.
  • Gifford Research Fellowship (1994-95)
This fellowship, funded by a bequest to the ancient universities of Scotland, provides a salary on the Research Fellow scale plus £1200 for travel.
  • British Marshall Scholarship (1991-94)
This annual British Government award funds two full years of study (approximately £11,000 per annum at the time) for 30-40 US graduates to attend their choice of universities in the UK. My scholarship was extended for a third year to complete a PhD.
  • Summa Cum Laude Bachelor of Arts (1991)
The distinction Summa Cum Laude (Highest Honours) is awarded to the graduate finishing with the highest Grade Point Average exceeding 3.75 (on a 4.0 scale).

This nationally competitive $1800 grant made possible my full-time summer research programme in free will and moral responsibility.
  • Undergraduate Research Grant (1989-90)
A $1900 grant from my University supported a six-month research project in philosophy of physics.
  • Other academic awards with significant stipends:
    Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, $14,000 (1989-91)
General Motors Liberal Arts Excellence Award, $10,000 (1989-91)

Willamette University Merit Scholarship, circa $40,000 (1987-91)
    National Merit Scholarship, $2000 (1987)
(Together, these awards covered nearly all the costs of my undergraduate education at a private university.)
